Gilbert Ford was born in Jackson, Mississippi and is named after his dad and grandfather, who are both professional photographers. Instead of picking up the camera and joining the family business, Gilbert attended Pratt in New York and majored in illustration. After graduating art school in 2000, he worked for a company designing and illustrating children's products where he created activity books, games and puzzles. He eventually left the company to work for himself full time as an illustrator.
He currently shares a studio in Greenpoint with painter/ illustrator Rachel Salomon. He has done work for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic Monthly, Harcourt , Little, Brown Co, The Oxygen Network, Blue Note Records, Target and other companies.
