Having acquired a degree in art from UCLA at a time when drawing and
painting were regarded as quaint relics from the past, Greg is self-
taught as an illustrator. While his fellow students were busy pasting
found objects to Marxist theory, he was in the art library discreetly
poring over old issues of Graphis. After graduating with no
marketable skills to speak of, Greg landed a job in the bull pen of a
Los Angeles ad agency. They apparently liked his ability to think
with a pencil so they soon made him an art director where he faked
his knowledge of typography and design (while secretly learning it on
the job). He spent a few more years impersonating a designer at
various graphic design firms before taking a crack at illustration
full time. He's been working more or less steadily ever since.
Greg's work has appeared in Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, The
New Yorker, and The Atlantic Monthly. He's also created images for
Target, Volkswagen, Purina, and Lands' End, and is a frequent
contributor to Monte Beauchamp's BLAB!, an irreverent comics
anthology published annually by Fantagraphics. He lives in Thousand
Oaks with his wife and two kids.
