Influences/Inspiration

My wonderful Grandpa; Rob Ryan; Sara Fanelli; the curtains in my first school; being a farmer's daughter; being told, when I was seven, that a nine year old girl created The Munch Bunch (this isn't entirely true, but thereafter I was convinced of the possibility I'd be published by the time I was eight).

Best Things In Life

Uncontrollable laughter on a narrow street in Bordeaux; running madly through the fields with my sister while singing; spectacular hats; the sky; heights; trees; walking across London Bridge in the sunshine; forgetting an umbrella and resigning myself to getting drenched; reading voraciously; receiving packages of old envelopes in the post from my dad, Fassett Wednesdays.

Music

Fleetwood Mac, Kings of Leon, Annie Lennox, The Guillemots, Joni Mitchell. Also Shostakovich (because the music compels me to dance and conduct along with scissors).

Kate Slater studied illustration at Kingston University from 2005 - 2008, where she swamped the studio with paper, baked a LOT of cakes, and constructed a 12-foot beanstalk from gardening magazines and duck tape. She spent the first 19 years of her life on a beautiful farm in Staffordshire, and is quite amazed to find herself living amid the vintage shoes and curry restaurants of Brick Lane.

Kate makes her illustrations by suspending separate, collaged elements from a framework on the wall, and then photographing this image to create the final illustration. This unique way of working came about while she was experimenting with cutouts and shadows in a sunny window. She has always enjoyed working in 3D and thinks she has discovered the perfect, if peculiar, combination. Yet despite being a paper-hoarding collage-holic, Kate also fills sketchbooks with pencil drawings (lately of bears and sausage dogs).

While her main interest lies in children's book illustration, Kate's reportage work will also feature in an exhibition at the Conningsbury Gallery in London. She has previously exhibited at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and in Shoreditch, London.
