Welcome to Episode 22!
In this two part series on ICONIC I talk with the Litttle Friends of Printmaking!
Introduction:
The Little Friends of Printmaking started out as a laugh but pretty soon turned into a farce. Husband-and-wife team J W & Melissa Buchanan made a name for themselves with silkscreened concert posters, but soon branched out to forge themselves a little cottage industry based almost entirely on bad vibes and spouting nonsense gibberish like "What up, my sucks?" and "What me up on the haps-side, mein hung-time stoolies?". Do the Little Friends represent a shining sliver of the zeitgeist who awaken to greet the latest unhappy news with crossed eyes and gritted teeth? Are the bad vibes and the obfuscating, incomprehensible slang a rejection of the square world and the vagueness of the hip? Or, ...are they just nuts?
Through lectures and artists' residencies, the Little Friends continue to proselytize on behalf of screenprinting, a perfectly fine and respectable form of printmaking whose commercial art underpinnings make it a useful vehicle to explore the economics of art. That, and it looks cool. A solo exhibition, Pink Blood, runs until July 8th at Mystery City in Chicago. Little Friends were recently named to the Art Directors' Club's list of 2006 Young Guns honorees. Their work will also appear in the 2006 American Illustration and Communication Arts illustration annuals.
