Welcome to Episode 36.

In this three part series on ICONIC I talk to the publisher Charles Hively of 3x3 magazine. We start out the conversation talking about his background, what led to start 3x3 and many other great topics on this episode of ICONIC. So warm up the cidar kids... ICONIC is now on! Enjoy!

Introduction: Charles Hively serves as both publisher and design director of 3x3 magazine. Wearing more than one hat is nothing new for Charles. He's a designer, ex-advertising agency head of two creative agencies, creative director, art director, sometime copywriter and photographer. And sometimes all of the above, all at once.

His background began in illustration and after college he formed his first advertising agency, "I wanted to combine my love for illustration with concept and design." Awards came to the agency and a chance to work in a larger market prompted Hively to join a larger agency where he got to work with some of the best illustrators and photographers in the country.

Hively has received over 400 industry awards from the Art Directors Club, The One Show Gold Pencil, Clios, AIGA, EFFIEs, Andys, CA Magazine, Graphis, Print and regional ad and design clubs.

After owning another agency for thirteen years and being a creative director in New York and then working for Graphis as a co-publisher Hively now enjoys this new avenue. "At 3x3 I get to look at illustrators from all over the world and invite them to be a part of something new, it's truly exciting and I don't even consider it work."

3x3 has received honors from the Society of Publication Designers and CA Magazine.

Charles is also principal of HivelyDesigns which handles branding, package design, advertising and editorial design for a variety of clients. The design group has been responsible for introducing a brand new women's magazine in 2005 and the recent redesign of a new student art magazine. Charles associate, Sarah Munt, is a graduate of Parsons and serves as art director of the new student magazine, Creative Quarterly, The Journal of Arts and Design. The studio is located in Brooklyn.
