Joshua Liner Gallery presents Compounded (in Gallery II,) an exhibition of new work by the Seattle-based artist Robert Hardgrave. This is Hardgrave’s debut exhibition in New York and his first solo show with Joshua Liner, which opens Saturday, May 17th.
In twenty-three works, ranging from large acrylic-on-canvas paintings to small ink-on-paper drawings, Hardgrave depicts phantasmagoric figures existing in painterly environments. Described by the artist as “countenances of spirits,” these images are built up from basic, expressive mark-making and complex shapes. See more of Hardgrave’s work, and read more on Compounded, right this way… .

Graham Roumieu’s third Bigfoot book, Bigfoot: I Not Dead, has received glowing reviews from Mark Medley at National Post and Paul Corupe at Rue Morgue magazine. You can catch the review in the Arts & Life section of today’s National Post and in the current issue of Rue Morgue.
The Walrus’ managing editor, Jared Bland, caught up with Bigfoot himself at his home in the woods. You can read the interview on The Walrus’ website now.

Check out this cool robot by flickr user mort au bon gout. I love the simple shapes that make up his body, the blue rays coming out of his eyes and the fact that he's wearing what appear to be a pair of chucks. HA! Totally fun!

Perhaps the hardest thing about posting all this great robot art is having to decide exactly which robot to include with the post! This cool robot is no exception. For robot #31, I bring you Gyro created by Guy Robot (aka Rich Muller). There are about 12 unique robots featured on Guy Robot, but Gyro might be my fave. I love his single eye, square body and funky, specialized antennae. Standing 19 inches tall, he is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
How do these robots come together? Guy Robot explains: After much tinkering and experimentation, the personality of each Guy Robot begins to take shape. This gelling is achieved through a precise, repeatable recipe consisting of one-part slide-rule calculation, two-parts trial-and-error metallurgical alloying, and four-parts leap-of-faith improvisation. Ha! Very cool! Be sure to check out Guy Robot for more.

The Yangs might have landed on their feet. We followed a tip from a friend and found a lovely apartment in a beautiful part of Brooklyn. We were SHOCKED because the new place is nicer than our current place. In a nutshell, our management company is crushing us like an ant, but we may have lucked into a better situation. Yangblog was happily running around in circles like a maniac.
Maybe Yangblog was prematurely celebrating like this. Maybe.
Abby and friends brought up an important point:
We haven't crossed the finish line yet.
If you will excuse me, I need to go back under my drawing table and rock back and forth in a fetal position.
No, there is no thumb sucking.
I'm a man for crying out loud.

J Otto Seibold’s show at Grass Hut, which opened last week, caused quite a bit of excitement and childhood memories to creep back into our heads. If you weren’t able to hop over to Portland this weekend to catch the opening in person, don’t fret! Seibold’s collection is now available for view online. Take a look at what this icon had to share right over here. .

It’s been busy, busy lately. I’ve just finished some great assignments.
Recently I completed artwork for the Nissan QuashQai Urban proof campaign for TBWA-London. It was a lot of fun to create the graffiti style monsters. The ads ran in a very cool way, mixed in with the listings in weekly entertainment guides. You can check out all the ads and how they ran on Tbwa-London’s web site.

Keeping with the theme of monsters and cars. I just finished this fun piece for Ranger Rick Magazine. The illustration is for the “Readers Riddles” section. Kids write in and submit their jokes to the magazine, the editors choose the funniest ones for publication. This one deals with a T-Rex’s eating habits. It is great to have illustrations published in magazines that I enjoyed as a kid. I’ve worked with the folks over at RR for many years and it is always a pleasure to get a call from them. There is some fun stuff for kids on their web site as well as great resources for students and educators. Here is a link to the BIRD BRAINS game I designed for the site years ago with my good friend Jeremy Seitz.

This illustration was created for Boys Life Magazine. The article was a feature on green living. The opener was about Rishi Sowa’s, Sprial Island. A little floating personal paradise he created out of recycled water bottles. Along with this story there are other inspiring and entertaining stories of clever people doing things differently.

Since returning to New York, Yangblog has been in a constant state of confusion and jet-lag induced fatigue. We found a lease renewal from the management company waiting for us. The new lease has finally reached our threshold for PAIN. Since we were out of the country when the notice arrived, we have 5 days to decide THE REST OF OUR LIVES. Using my 20+ years of negotiating savvy and "fog of war" angles of attack, we came to an agreement: We agreed to do things their way and they promise not to squish us like an overripe pimple.
Until Monday.
We are furiously looking at our options. Do we stay? Do we grovel? Do we move? Do we stay and buy? Do we move and buy? Do we move, buy, sell, then move back across the street from our old place for the memories? Yada yada yada. Ever see a hamster running mindlessly like a mental patient on a wheel? This is the Yangblog's life EVERY DAY since we've returned.
I promise I promise I promise to get back to posting once the dust settles after this weekend-
