Who are some of your favorite illustrators and why?
Deanne Cheuk - because she is so damn creative. Just the compositions of her work are inspiring. Her colors and subject matter for the Mushroom Girls stuff ... UPSO ... KAWS of course ... Grotesk ... N8W! They're just all very creative and progressive in ways that inspire myself and others Who are some of your favorite illustrators and why?
Nate Williams (www.n8w.com) is my newest fave. I love his expression of characters that just seem so straight on, and the way he uses textural elements to describe parts of them is really interesting to me. Another in England whose name is Von (www.hellovon.com) uses a realistic form of sketching and then melds it with layers... it's beautiful. Usually when I like an illustrator or artist, it is because they use characters in a quirky way that gets to the subject they are portraying... Margaret Kilgallen, Camille Rose Garcia, Barry McGee, Mark Ryden are a few of my favortite all time artists. I would call them more "illustrative painters", but they all have something to say about the society in which we live" something I find very attractive about their work. All of them use illustrative elements in their work, and their characters are very clean. Who are some of your favorite illustrators and why?
Gina Triplett's work is lovely, great sense of line and very organic.
Deanne Cheuk's work is wonderfull & subtle.
I love Ferris Plock's work he's got such a great sense of humor, there is so much playful energy in his work but there's a certain depth to it as well, well its intriguing. Lately though, I've been going back to looking at fecalface.com to see what everyone is up to in SF, that art scene is continuing to blow up. Who are some of your favorite illustrators and why?
Maurice Vellekoop, Christoph Niemann, Zohar Lazar, Tavis Coburn, Owen Smith, Oksana Badrak, Mark Todd. They all have a distinctive and consistent style. So many illustrators look the same these days (especially digital). When I see an illustration by one of these artists, there is no doubt in my mind who did it, because they have carved out a specific niche and style for themselves. I tend to like illustration that has a hand-finished quality. The most important thing to me is consistency. I want to know exactly the style and quality of work I'm getting without worrying about whether the illustrator can pull it off. Who are some of your favorite illustrators and why?
I am not always thinking illustration, however creative artist or graphic narrative artist or fine artist. Personally, I look for individuals that are looking to cross over into fine arts or toys or film or music or design or action sports or performance artists or all the above. Typically, I am looking for individuals that are not afraid to express themselves and build their worlds with the artifacts of their life (real or imaginary). I think if I start plugging artists in this question, I might have some explaining to do, so I will respectfully refrain. Ok, I love the entire world of art and experience and would love to collaborate with as many artists in my lifetime as possible. |
