Post ICON6

Back in New York, which means waking up at almost noon- instead of at almost 9 am!- I’m happy to say I’m proud of our job, the board’s that is, at ICON6.

We changed the format (mutiple choices Vs. now one-tent), we changed the attitude (nasty chain emails Vs. happy-go-lucky board experience), we changed the speakers (mostly show&tell illustrators Vs. more art directors) and we continued to do our very best to make sure it was worth your time, money and high expectations.

So far so good, even ICON all-timers like Gary Taxali, Kathie Bleck and Ann Field said it was the best ICON ever- I’m afraid to ask Hively, but dying to know what he thinks.

I felt honored, thrilled, and scared (shitless) to be on the stage with all of you in the audience. For real. Thanks for coming, thanks for staying, thanks for your support, and thanks for putting up with me when you’re MY speakers. Hopefully I was half as good as you- illustration stars- are on the stage.

Hope to see you again sooner than later, in NY, in LA, or wherever the next ICON is.

Here are some more pix of joy, for those of you who are not on Facebook.

Highlights include: Soccer game | Art Center party | Opening party | Happy hour | Nucleus opening | Closing party … oh, yeah, and the actual conference

Special thanks to Paul Rogers, Brian Rea, Jason Holley, Heads of State and Tim Biskup for making us sound cool, funny and charming even when we’re not.

More great times to come!

ICON6 Video: The Future of Publishing Part 3

Over the past couple of days I’ve posted Part 1 and Part 2 of the opening keynote address from theICON6 Illustration Conference, called The Future of Publishing, which brought together Wyatt Mitchell (Creative Director, WIRED), Kelly Doe (Art Director, The New York Times), Jim Heimann (Executive Editor, Taschen America), Jeremy Clark (Senior Experience Design Manager, Adobe), and Roger Black (Principal, Roger Black Studios).

Today I’d like to share Part 3 of the presentation, where Kelly Doe discusses the ways that The New York Times is “thinking about the future”, and what that might mean for Illustrators and other creative professionals.

Support the Mail Me Art project!

Posted By darren | 0 Comments

Mail Me Art: Medium Without a Message is the follow-up to the successful 2008 Mail Me Art: Going Postal. We are proud to announce we have over 700 new pieces of mail art. Medium Without a Message is an amazing collection of envelopes and boxes from around the world decorated by some of today’s most talented illustrators and artists. What makes the work special is that every single piece of art was sent through the postal system, exposed and on view as regular mail. At the end of this month all of the work will be on display at the London Mail Me Art exhibition.

How can you help support the project and become part of it? Well… The running costs for the project are currently at around £6000($9120). We’re hoping to recoup most of that by selling the new book and we’re also hoping to make the artists lots of money by selling their work at the exhibition! We’ve just finished the book and we got as many of the mail artists into the book as possible in some way or another! So please help us recoup some of the costs by making a pledge and supporting the project! In return for a pledge we’re sending people copies of the new book. We’ve also got some really cool artwork up for grabs from the likes of Dan May & Jon Burgerman! Please check out the site for more details – http://mailmeart.com/going-postal/pledge/

Interview with Raymond Biesinger

Raymond Biesinger’s taught himself how to illustrate in the pages of his university student newspaper in the Siberian clime of Edmonton, Canada. There he learned the wonders of concepts, minimalism, political history and Xerox machines; all kinds of real-world physical image-making techniques and mental approaches that are the spine of what he does today. He’s moving to Montreal in early August, bringing with him a satchel full of clients ranging from the New Yorker to GQ to Monocle to shitty photocopied zines and noise rock bands. He’s been accompanying the social economist Tim Harford’s “Undercover Economist” column in the Financial Times’ Weekend magazine for a few years now, too. Strange how that works. Oh, and he’s also in a music duo called the Famines, due for their fourth trans-Canada tour in the fall.
